100 Years of the RAF in Lincolnshire

A visit to Rural Roosts is the perfect base to explore the rich RAF in Lincolnshire’s heritage with an aviation trail in and around the city of Lincoln and fascinating heritage sites just a short drive away.

Lincolnshire is home to the Red Arrows aerobatic display team, often practicing over Lincoln’s skies, the International Bomber Command Memorial, and many operating RAF bases.

Lincoln 1940’s Weekend – 11th and 12th August. Celebrate the spirit of 1940s Britain in Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter with two days of period and vintage activities and displays, including this year’s key focus on the 100th anniversary of the RAF.

Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter will be full of atmosphere at Lincoln’s biggest 1940s celebration yet. Spanning over the entire weekend, Lincoln 1940s Weekend will be part of the bigger city wide celebration of the 100th anniversary of the RAF.

Expanding from The Strait through to the Bailgate, you’ll find vintage displays, live entertainment, markets and activities for all the family to enjoy.

Traders will be lining Castle Hill and The Strait, offering a unique shopping experience, selling antiques, clothing, confectionary and artwork with a vintage theme. Charities will be joining the stall holders, raising money and awareness for the Royal Air Forces and the Armed Forces community, and other local charities.

Danesgate, Bailgate and Minster Yard will be decorated with vintage vehilces from the era from the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society and other private collectors.

A fantastic line up of live entertainment will feature throughout the weekend at our two performance areas on The Strait and Castle Hill. Get on your dancing shoes and learn to swing and jive at St. Paul in the Bail. The roman site will be turning into our pop-up food court and dance arena for the day, perfect spot for a relaxing lunch with a 40s vibe. There will be flypasts from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight too: the Lancaster, Dakota, Spitfire and Hurricane are all confirmed to make an appearance over the weekend. Times to be announced.

Lincoln has a rich aviation heritage stretching from the UK’s early aviation history through to the present day. You can explore this hidden side of Lincoln with the Aviation Trail.

Lincoln was at the centre of the UK’s fledgling aviation industry during World War I, producing over 3,500 aircraft and 3,000 aero engines at its peak.

Known as Bomber County during World War II due to the squadrons based in the county, Lincolnshire is still today at the centre of aviation, being home to several RAF bases, and the famous RAF Red Arrows.

The Lincoln Aviation Trail takes you around Lincoln and the surrounding area to show you the icons and landmarks of the aviation industry nearby including Lincoln Cathedral, RAF Waddington and the RAF Scampton Heritage Centre.

The trail is available in a printed version from the Visitor Information Centre for £1 or online as an interactive smart-phone web app.

Rural Roosts is the perfect holiday base, enabling you to enjoy a comfortable stay in our  self catering pine lodges set in the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside, whilst being able to visit all the aviation heritage and events across the county.
