Back in June saw our first Hereford heifer (female) calf born on Manor Farm. This was closely followed by a second heifer calf which arrived in the night without any problems. The next arrivals were twins, one heifer and one bull calf which needed some additional milk for a few days after they were born. Our youngest daughter enjoyed helping her Daddy to feed them with the big bottle as you can see in the photo! At present the calves are all still with their mothers, growing on very well.
In the last couple of weeks we have bought five more Hereford cows with calves at foot, increasing our adult herd to nine. The adult Herefords should hopefully now all be in calf again and we will be looking forward to another calving season beginning around February / March time next year.
The ‘Hereford’ cattle are known for their vigour and foraging ability and for their longevity, many females live and produce calves beyond the age of 15 years. Herefords are generally docile and fast growing cattle with very good beef quality.
