Calving and Scanning Pre-Lambing at Rural Roosts!

January had a busy start on the farm with the safe arrival of 2 Hereford calves ‘George’ and ‘Elsa’. I was in charge of all the livestock that week due to my husband and son having a weeks holiday so I was very relieved when both calves arrived fit and healthy without any problems!

Last Sunday we scanned our 326 sheep, the results came out well with 58 due to have single lambs, 234 due to have twins and 24 due to have triplets. The scan results help us with preparing the ewes prior to lambing with feeding quantities etc. We mark the ewes with a dot of spray according to how many lambs she will have – it also helps when we are lambing to know how many lambs each individual ewe will have. We are due to start lambing around the 1st week in March and should finish lambing the main flock during the beginning of April. We also have our small flock of Herdwick sheep which are due to lamb sometime during April.
